Photos of the cosmos: Asteroid (162173) Ryugu

After a 42-month voyage, the Japanese ship Hayabusa-2 arrived at the asteroid (162173) Ryugu, 300 million kilometers away from Earth. It happened on June 27th.

An amazing achievement was confirmed when the device was fixed only 20 km from the surface of the asteroid with a diameter of 1 km. This image was mined on June 24, when the ship approached a distance of 40 km.

Hayabusa-2 seeks to study in detail Ryuga, pull a European and several Japanese landing gear to the surface and deliver ancient samples to Earth in 2020.

In 2014-2017 ground station ESTRACK provided important mission communication support. In July this year, support will be resumed as an additional communication contact session per week along with Serebros station (Spain).
