Strange sunshine over Mexico City

Was it a UFO? Could this be evidence of a near end?

An incomprehensible kind of glow appeared around the sun over Mexico City on Thursday. This optical phenomenon gave rise to many jokes and rumors about the near end of the world.

Some were not so surprised.

"I received about 30 phone calls from people who were seriously frightened and took this phenomenon as a bad omen, some people think that it was a forerunner of heavy rain," said Coordinator of the National Weather Service, Juan Manuel Caballero.

“I had to repeat several times: No, it will not harm you if you don’t look at it for a long time,” added Caballero. However, his assurances did not work on many people who used to believe television.

“The aliens have finally arrived! Prepare sandwiches for the road!”, Someone wrote on Facebook.

Others thought it was a government conspiracy to blind the voters before the next election. So, one of Twitter users wrote: "The sunshine a few days before the election. Coincidence? I do not think."

Scientists have a better explanation: sunshine occurs when sunlight passes through ice crystals, causing the rays to refract and create a multicolored ring.

“This is a common phenomenon. People just never look up,” noted Caballero.
