A new system can guarantee up to 10 kilowatts of electricity.

When scientists deliver spacecraft to the Moon, Mars, and other space objects, then among the resources used, energy is considered the most important. A reliable and efficient energy system is needed for everyday needs, such as lighting, water, oxygen, and various mission objectives, such as experiments and the creation of fuel for return.

Therefore, NASA is experimenting with the Kilopower project - a new source capable of providing safe, effective and abundant energy for future robotic and human space missions.

This pioneer program is able to guarantee up to 10 kilowatts of electrical power. This amount is enough to provide two average households for 10 years. Only 4 such blocks will give the necessary power to create an outpost.

About experiment

A prototype of the energy system was developed at the Glenn Research Center in collaboration with the Center for Space Flight. Marshall and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The nuclear reactor was provided by the National Security Complex Y12.

Recently began testing a nuclear reactor. To do this, you need to connect the power plant to the core and activate pass-through checks. A full trial is expected at the end of March. It lasts 28 hours.

Kilopower advantage

A project can provide a tremendous amount of energy anywhere. On Mars, the power of the Sun varies throughout the season, and some dust storms can cover the planet for months. The moon suffers from cold nights for 14 days.

The new power source is able to cope with an extreme environment. For example, on the Red Planet, it will provide access to northern latitudes where water can be hidden. Kilopower is light, reliable and efficient.
