Light echo around supernova

Light echo around supernova

In the vastness of the galaxy M82 one can observe how the glow from a supernova explosion event throws off a massive dust haze in interstellar space. SN 2014J is located on the upper right and recorded January 21, 2014.

Supernova glow beats off large-scale dust haze

The cloud extends for 300-1600 light years. SN 2014J belongs to the Ia-type and acts as the nearest similar explosion. Lives in a double star system, represented by a white dwarf and a nearby star. Dwarfs explode after taking away the necessary amount of material from a neighbor. In the picture you can see a bright blue disk, small clouds and fiery jets of burning hydrogen. Approaching M81 results in gas compression and activation of the formation of several star clusters.

M82 is 11.4 million light-years distant from us and is located on the territory of the Great Bear. Because of its elongated shape (the tilt of the star disk in relation to the earth observer), it was also called the “Cigar Galaxy”.
