New project on life support in space

The University of Barcelona is considering a prototype version of a self-sustaining life support system designed for people to be in space for a long time.

This experimental setup is called MELiSSA and is shown in the picture for the airtight glass.

Today, the crew of the ISS is still in need of ground supplies. But such lines can not be used for space travel to distant worlds. Therefore, the new project, which includes 11 countries, is seeking to improve the regenerative life-support system, which could supply astronauts with oxygen, water and food. In the experimental facility there is a multi-section loop with a light bioreactor, as well as oxygen-containing algae, capable of supporting the life of three rats for several months.

The experiment is carried out on the ISS. In May, experts will gather to discuss the details of the MELiSSA project, study the closed loop, and solve issues on air, water, waste and food recycling.
