Found the first fragments of a meteorite from Michigan

On January 19, 2018, the astronomer and executive director of the Sloan Museum, Todd Slisher, took part in a press conference organized at the Longway Planetarium (Michigan). Scientists were able to find three fragments from a meteorite that fell on January 16

All American meteorite hunters flew to Detroit to find fragments from a meteor that exploded on January 16th. Scientists report that an object with a width of 6 feet split at a height of 20 miles above the Earth.

The American Meteor Society reports that the first samples were found on Thursday by Larry Atkins and Robert Ward from Arizona. Atkins admired the find: "Only recently, these fragments flew past the moon, and now lie in my hand."

Ward said he used seismic data, Doppler radar and information from witnesses to narrow the search area. Meteorite hunters ask permission from landowners before they explore the area.

According to Ward, for the year he managed to collect about 600 remnants of meteorites from around the world. Meteorite is a small piece of an asteroid or comet. When it comes to the earth's atmosphere, it becomes a fireball or “shooting star”. Surviving fragments are valuable to scholars and collectors. Remains will be analyzed in the laboratory.
