First activation of NASA’s GOLD

SES-14 Snapshot - Commercial Communication Satellite Transporting NASA GOLD Device

The NASA GOLD mission (Large-scale observation of the disk edge and disk) was first activated after launch on January 28. Engineers successfully established communication with the device. The first test was conducted on the same day at 19:40 (EST). The tool will remain on until the SES-14 satellite reaches the geostationary orbit. GOLD operations will begin at the end of 2018.

GOLD studies the dynamic movement of space and the top of the atmospheric layer. Scientists seek to understand what drives change in this critical area. The findings will improve the predictions of a model of space weather events affecting terrestrial life, astronauts and satellites.
