What is a dome? This is a slight elevation, resembling a mountain. Here is a snapshot showing a similar feature on the dwarf planet Ceres. She received the name Kwanza Dome. “Kwanza” translates as “first fruits” in Swahili and is an African American holiday, rooted in the ancient African harvest traditions.

Kwanza stretches 35 x 19 km and rises 3 km above the surroundings. Of course, the mountain does not rise sharply above the surface, so it is difficult to see it on the mosaic on the left (stands out as a small shadow of the crescent). The image on the right shows an elevation map of the area.

The rounded shape is typical for domes, but the formation is different from others in Ceres. This site is especially rich in such domes. The current map shows 6 in a region spanning 32 degrees north latitude and 327 degrees east. Scientists believe that the dome of Kwanza before could be much higher, resembling Mount Akhun (the highest on Ceres). But Ahuna was formed by the gradual accumulation of dense ice materials. However, ice is not strong enough to maintain a high structure, therefore, cryovolcanoes on a dwarf planet will gradually collapse. So Kwanza and others can be degraded by mountains that have emerged due to the process of cryovolcanism.
