Thanksgiving in space! How do astronauts celebrate a holiday in orbit?

Three astronauts are currently living on the International Space Station. They are 408 km away from Earth, but this does not prevent them from celebrating the US national holiday Thanksgiving Day on November 22, 2018. The festive meal was shared by Russian cosmonaut Sergei Prokopiev, ESA representative Alexander Gerst and NASA astronaut Serina Aunon-Chancellor. Gerst said that he was already happy to celebrate with the Americans on the ISS. Together with a NASA representative, they recorded a video greeting from space.

It is worth recalling that soon new members of the team will join the members of the ISS: Oleg Kononenko, McClain Ann Charlotte and David Saint-Jacques. Their launch is scheduled for December 3rd.

The current team of the orbital station gathered on the evening of November 22 for a festive dinner sent from Earth in advance. On the table there are turkey, candied yams and a pound cake.

“Thanksgiving is a holiday designed to spend time with those you love. Therefore, we will enjoy this meal together and then contact our relatives on Earth, ”said Aunon-Chancellor. During the holiday, members of the expedition got the day off and will return to work on November 23. The astronauts still have a lot of tasks, because you need to disassemble two new deliveries and continue to conduct research projects in the orbital laboratory.
