Disguised Spiral

Disguised Spiral

It seems that before us is a magic wand from the “Harry Potter” series, however, the NGC 1032 galaxy captured by the Hubble Space Telescope is hiding in a gloomy space.

NGC 1032 is about 100 million light-years distant and lives in China. It looks beautiful, but the picture does not reflect the real nature. In fact, we have an amazing spiral galaxy in front of us. But for the earthly observer, a gigantic disk of gas, dust and stars is almost visible.

In the background is a group of other galaxies. Many of them are face-turned or angled, allowing them to show their spiral arms and bright cores. This arrangement provides many details about the structure. A full understanding of the three-dimensional structure also gives an idea of the distribution of stars and helps to measure the “height” of the disk and the bright stellar core.
