Peering into the abyss of the mysterious Gama Nebula

Hidden deep inside the Gama Nebula, which is located about 1300 light-years from Earth, extends a collection of objects that look like comets. But of course they are not comets. These are small foggy balls of gas and dust, and their nature remains a mystery.

This stunning photograph taken by the Very Large Telescope telescope captures a “ball-shaped comet” called CG4. Compared with the surrounding nebula, CG4 is very small, but in fact its size would have eclipsed the solar system. The central part of such a ball has 1, 5 light years in diameter, and its weak tail extends to 8 light years. CG4 and other nearby objects, as a rule, are directed from the remnant of the Vela supernova in the center of the Gama Nebula, which extends nearly 1000 light-years wide.
