NASA recalls September 11th with new images of New York from space

The smoke screen rises from a place that was once the World Trade Center of New York (September 12). This shot was taken the day after two aircraft crashed into twin towers during the terrorist attack.

Since the tragic event of September 11, 17 years have passed. NASA decided to honor the memory of the victims with new images of New York and Washington from a space perspective. The image was obtained by astronaut Richard Arnold on June 19 from the ISS.

Arnold shots show the location where the World Trade Center used to be before two planes crashed into twin towers. Next to the Ground Zero Memorial (Ground Zero), a new tower was created.

In another picture you can see the Pentagon in Arlington County (Virginia). This image was received by ESA cosmonaut Tom Peske on April 11, 2017. During the terrorist attack, NASA astronaut Frank Culbertson was the only American who was not on Earth. At his post in the ISS, he began documenting the event from a height of 400 km above the planet.

June 19, 2018 astronaut Richard Arnold got a picture of New York from the ISS

In a letter, Culbertson wrote: “The world has changed today. What I say or do is insignificant compared to what happened in our country. ”
