South Africa presents a super radio telescope

Image quality will now be 50 times greater than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

On July 13, South Africa presented a super radio telescope, the first stage of which will be the world's largest telescope to unravel the secrets of the universe. The MeerKAT telescope is designed for 64 plates, located in Cara, and will be integrated into the SKA. When fully operational, it will exceed the power of the Hubble telescope 50 times.

It is expected that by 2030 it will be fully launched and prepared for operation. At that time, there will be 3,000 plates located on an area of square kilometer in remote areas of several African countries and Australia. Thus, scientists will be able to study the space in detail. Already reported that MeerKAT was able to show the clearest vision of the black hole in the center of the Milky Way.

SKA explores exploding stars, black holes and traces of the origin of the universe about 14 billion years ago. South Africa, where the main part of the project is located, has invested $ 240 million into a telescope.

The telescope is created by an international consortium, which includes Australia, Britain, Canada, China, Italy, India, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Sweden.
