The moon will spoil the meteor show

The moon will spoil the meteor show

On Saturday, the Perseid meteor shower will reach its maximum. And we could enjoy an amazing show, if not for the bright Moon, which is going to intervene. So you can see only 5th part of all objects.

Our satellite will go into the hibiscus phase, that is, it will be half closed, and the light will fill the night sky, illuminating the flying objects.

Perseids arrive when the Earth passes through the garbage belt left by the Swift-Tattle comet. Its orbital path is 113 years.

Each shooting star is a fragment of this comet, which is burned by friction against the earth's atmosphere. Usually, residents of the Northern Hemisphere can track 100-120 objects per hour.

Last year, we were surprised by an unusual activity that was twice as high as normal. Now they should fall at a speed of 150 m / h, but we will only see the largest and strongest objects. The moon entered the full phase on August 7 and will weaken to 80% by Saturday.

All is not lost

Of course, we will not be able to enjoy a full-scale show. But you can reduce the effect. Try to find a place away from the city. It is better to move to the sea or to the village, where there are not so many city lights.

In addition, in 2018 they expect much better conditions. The crescent will come early, so Perseids will seem in all its glory. They are also called the tears of St. Lawrence in honor of the Christian saint, whom in 258 AD er tortured by the Romans.
