The Mystery of Martian Landscapes

The Mystery of Martian Landscapes

For a long time, scientists could not understand how amazing features are formed on the surface Martian layer in the absence of the necessary amount of water. To understand, we conducted special experiments in a modeling chamber - a device that simulates the atmospheric conditions of the Red Planet.

It turned out that a thin atmosphere in combination with periods of relatively warm temperatures causes the surface water to boil. This process transports huge amounts of sand and other sediments over long distances.

As a result, a small water volume manages to form large dunes, ravines and other remarkable features. This is a new geological phenomenon that is not found on the expanses of our Earth. But this is a crucial observation for understanding similar processes on other planets.

The researchers plan to continue to explore water sources and the effects of their impact. Perhaps these will be engaged rover Mars 2020.
