Amateur astronomer helped open exoplanet

Researchers from the Kourovka Astronomical Observatory of the Ural Federal University found a new exoplanet. One candidate was caught in the KPS project and turned out to be a kind of hot Jupiter.

The new world was called KPS-1b. Revolves around a star resembling the Sun, with a period of 40 hours. In mass and size close to Jupiter, but is too close to the parent star. Because of this, the temperature of the atmosphere is much higher than on Jupiter.

Software for data analysis and search for candidates developed at the university. Early observations were carried out in a number of observatories around the world, including the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The researchers believe that this discovery is unique because the signs of an exoplanet could be found in the data collected by an amateur astronomer using available equipment. The search for new exoplanets, as well as detailed studies of already known alien worlds, allow us to get closer to understanding how our system was formed and developed. The discovery was made in collaboration with astronomers from Belgium, USA, England, France, the Netherlands, Turkey, Portugal, Lithuania, Italy and Canada.
