The principle of operation of magnetostrictive level gauges

The phenomenon of magnetostriction was discovered by the Englishman J.P. Joule in the middle of the 19th century. The scientist noticed that as a result of a change in the magnetization of bodies, their bodies are compressed or stretched, in other words, their shape and size change.

Somewhat later, it was discovered that the phenomenon of magnetostriction is a reversible process, the essence of which is that a change in the size of bodies is accompanied by a change in their magnetic characteristics.

Magnetostrictive level gauges installed in tanks, as a rule, are a waveguide made of a special metal with high magnetic permeability, which is installed vertically. The upper part of the waveguide is located on the outer side of the tank, and the lower part is on its bottom. A float with magnets is attached to the waveguide so that it floats on the surface of the material in the tank. When applying an ultrasonic pulse to the upper part of the waveguide, the float due to the phenomenon of magnetostriction begins to act mechanically on the waveguide. In this case, the ultrasonic pulse reflected from this effect is directed to the upper part of the waveguide, where the measurement of its return time is carried out. The level of material placed in the tank is in direct proportion to this time.
