Level Measuring Instruments
The determination of the level of materials placed in various types of containers is carried out with the help of special devices called level gauges.
The design and principle of operation of these devices are quite diverse. They are distinguished by their purpose, measurement accuracy, sensitivity of sensors, frequency of measurements, the possibility of remote measurement and automation, the cost of arranging the measurement system, the method of implementation.
Currently, the following systems for measuring the level of liquid and bulk materials are widely used:
- float, waveguide, hydrostatic, capacitive (contact systems);
- with sound sounding, with radiation or electromagnetic radiation (contactless systems).
All these systems are characterized by both advantages and certain kinds of disadvantages.

The principle of operation of magnetostrictive level gauges
The phenomenon of magnetostriction was discovered by the Englishman J.P. Joule in the middle of the 19th century. The scientist noticed that as a result of a change in the magnetization of bodies, their bodies are compressed or stretched, in other words, their shape and size change.
Somewhat later, it was discovered that the phenomenon of magnetostriction is a reversible process, the essence of which is that a change in the size of bodies is accompanied by a change in their magnetic characteristics.
Magnetostrictive level gauges installed in tanks, as a rule, are a waveguide made of a special metal with high magnetic permeability, which is installed vertically. The upper part of the waveguide is located on the outer side of the tank, and the lower part is on its bottom. A float with magnets is attached to the waveguide so that it floats on the surface of the material in the tank. When applying an ultrasonic pulse to the upper part of the waveguide, the float due to the phenomenon of magnetostriction begins to act mechanically on the waveguide. In this case, the ultrasonic pulse reflected from this effect is directed to the upper part of the waveguide, where the measurement of its return time is carried out. The level of material placed in the tank is in direct proportion to this time. Thanks to the use of special floats, in addition to determining the level of the material, they also measure the level at which the separation of materials with different densities takes place, for example: petroleum - commercial water.
Advantages and scope
Magnetostriction level gauges have the following advantages:
- the highest sensitivity, which many times exceeds the sensitivity of most other non-contact devices and sensors;
- high measurement accuracy;
- easy maintenance;
- reliable, durable, low-wear constructive device.
They are widely used for equipping tanks, tanks, tank farms with automatic systems for controlling the level of liquid and bulk materials, including oil and oil products, flammable and combustible materials, liquids with caustic, corrosive and toxic properties, dry natural and artificial bulk materials.
