Night blizzard on Mars

Night blizzard on Mars

Scientists have noticed that large-scale storms exist on Mars that form only at night. It was previously believed that the snow from low-lying Martian clouds falls slowly and absently because of the strong wind. But new results suggest that particles of frozen water crash into the surface not in the hourly interval, but in a few minutes.

But do not think that the colonists will have to stock up on skis. You do not blind the Martian snowman, because there will be no snow hills. But a lot of frost.

The Martian atmosphere is 100 times thinner than Earth's, but it still manages to maintain weather conditions. But there is too little moisture. In fact, we face a cold desert, where there are ice deposits found in 2008 in polar caps. Signs of precipitation were noted below the cloud layer of the rover. Features night weather was able to fix a pair of satellites. To understand, it was necessary to create a new atmospheric model. It turns out that cooling water ice at night can form unstable conditions in the clouds.

Martian blizzards resemble small meteorological terrestrial phenomena - microbursts, where dense and cold air flows with snow or rain quickly fall from the clouds.

In the atmosphere of the Red Planet there is 96% carbon dioxide, 2% argon and nitrogen, as well as impurities of oxygen, nitrogen oxide, krypton and neon.
