ESA Large Space Simulator

ESA Large Space Simulator

Round body with a huge number of mirrors - space simulator from the European Space Agency. It reaches a height of 15 m, and in diameter - 10 m. This is enough to accommodate an inverted double-decker bus inside.

The mechanism is endowed with Europe’s largest vacuum chamber, so in its conditions all satellites are tested before launch. They are placed on a moving system (center), simulating movement in space.

When the top and side hatches close, high-performance pumps create a vacuum a billion times lower than the standard atmosphere at sea level. The mirror grid reflects the simulated sunlight into the chamber, and the walls pump liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -190 ° C. All this creates extreme thermal conditions encountered in orbit.
