New data indicate that the cause of the FBI investigation and the closure of the Sanspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico was downloaded child pornography. The solar observatory is located on the peak of Sacramento in the southern part of New Mexico. It was closed from September 6-16 due to “security problems”, which remained a mystery all this time. The lack of information led to the creation of many rumors, such as spies, aliens or solar activity, threatening to destroy all of humanity.
But the truth has finally surfaced. It turns out that the FBI is investigating the use of Wi-Fi Sanspot for downloading and distributing child pornography. An employee was identified as a suspect whose laptop was used to connect the observatory to the Internet. On September 14, FBI representatives confiscated three mobile phones, five laptops, one iPad, an external hard drive, 16 flash drives, 89 compact discs and other materials from the suspect. The FBI reports that the suspect was not arrested or charged with a crime, but the case is still under investigation. Sanspot is a National Solar Observatory facility managed by the Association of Universities for Astronomy Research (AURA). Representatives of AURA stressed that they cooperate with the authorities and they had to hide the true reasons for the investigation from the public.
